The Kneady Homesteader

 


Some of you may know about the car accident Heather and her husband Matt Cohn were in on February 13. They took their two little ones out for an early Valentine's Day dinner. On the way home, it started snowing. Out of the blue, they were hit head-on by a drunk driver. Matt was killed on impact. Heather and Mena were unconscious. Mason, however, was not unconscious. He witnessed the whole horrific incident. He saw his father die and the drunk driver who just killed his father get out of his vehicle and walk around. Mason will have to live with this image for the rest of his life. By the way, Mason is eight years old. Mena is only five.


Why is it as a society we still set back and let people drive drunk? I say "let" because I don't see anyone stepping up and saying something when they know someone is going to drive drunk. Nobody has the courage to be the 'uncool' person who speaks up. We value being cool over the 'sanctity of life' when it suits us. When will we as a society start standing up?   Have you ever wondered why some people in America are eligible to run for an office like the Senate or President, but others who might be more qualified are not ? I have been wondering about this. Let’s first examine the cost of running for a national office. Before we get started, let's look at what the base cost was to run for an office in 1915, right before the Federal Reserve was established.  The Senate seat was $2k up to but not exceeding $10k.  Presidential $5k to $10k.
