"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the masses is an important element in a democratic society." Edward Bernays
This is how the chapter starts out. Edward Bernays makes it clear from the onset that our opinions are engineered by a group of people who believe they have the right to decide what we like and don't like. My late father used to tell me that there was a government behind the government.
Mr. Bernays confirmed this by the end of chapter one. I've always heard there were certain folks who were taught by scholars that they have an innate ability to lead others. They go to colleges like Yale, Princeton, or Harvard. They attend these ivy league elite schools on what's called a Rohde Scholarship. They are told that they are special. They deserve to be on top of the world. Also, men of certain intelligence deserve to rule the masses who don't know what's best for them.
So basically, we, the masses, don't have a clue about what is right from wrong. We need these pretentious assholes to tell us what we like, popular, acceptable, and for God's sake don't rebel. Don't have a different opinion. Don't question anything.
