Carrie Buck was raped in 1924 at the age of 16. That rape resulted in a baby girl named Vivan. Carrie adored her daughter just like any other mother. However, the difference between Carrie and other mothers in 1924 was that she came from a poor family that received much of an education. They weren't that smart either. The elitist members of the Commonwealth of Virginia had rumors about her family. However, had the board consulted her school records which would've reflected the opposite of their observations. Carrie's parents were married at the time of her birth. She did well in school in spite of her mom had given her up at four years of age. Carrie only went up to sixth grade. Which was typical for poor whites at the time.
Carrie was placed with the Dobbs family at four. They had known her parents. After she was raped, she denied anything happened. That is typical of some rape survivors. Especially when the rapist is someone they know and trust. Mrs. Dobbs' nephew grew up around Carrie all her life. She trusted him. After it became clear she was pregnant the Dobbs family claimed she was feeble-minded from childhood. They went so far as to lie and say she was 'peculiar' even as a baby.
I am talking about this case because it highlights how the 'two sides' is nonsense. When push came to shove Democrats and Republicans were in on getting a law passed which would protect communities from the feeble-minded gene. Neither one put up a constitutional based argument against forced sterilization. The same people pushing for it hired the lawyers for both sides. This would constitute a conflict of interest.
Also, while Carrie knew about sterilization because she was manipulated into choosing it. Her sister, Doris, didn't get that opportunity. She was sterilized against her wishes without her knowledge. She was told her appendixes needed to be removed. Instead, they took her fertility. Doris Buck didn't know for years why she had her husband couldn't have kids
Why should we care about this? Because the feeble-minded was just the start of this government-controlled populating. They started with the feeble-minded and moved on to the Blacks, Jews, Alcoholics, Drug Addicts, and anyone else the government seen unfit to breed. Where does it end? By the way, the law is still on the books and can be enforced when needed. Harry Laughlin later received an honorary degree from the University of Heidelberg. Later Hitler would go on to use this monster’s work to justify his extermination of those ‘undesirable’ members of the Third Reich Society.
