I just watched an amazing gentleman on ted talks. Ron Finley like a lot of people who lived in Los Angeles watched the murder rate go through the roof as a kid. Then it stopped. After the Rodney King ordeal in the early 90's, the Bloods and Crips decided enough was enough. They were running out of manpower and bullets.
Ron Finley watched another destructive force move into his community. Fast Food Resturants. The drive-thrus were killing more than the drive-bys. Folks dying from curable diseases like diabetes. Dialysis centers were popping up like Starbucks. At that point, Mr. Finley said enough.
He started a garden on a vacant piece of land with the city didn't care about. Of course, after one complaint the city came down on him. Threaten him with a fine. Okay, this man has survived in the most dangerous areas of your city and a fine is supposed to scare him. No! A fine isn't going to scare someone who grew up with drive-bys where a part of the night. LA Times got involved and the tone from city changed real quick and there was a petition put up on the internet.
Bottom line, we need more people like Mr. Ron Finley. We need them across the country before having a community is as illegal as having a home garden is in some areas.
