This week’s story reminds me of the stories my late mom used to tell me about families coming together after a long day of picking Juniper berries. Mrs. M. Paneitz wrote about when the prices for corn dropped to $.10 a bushel. That’s terrible. Her family lived on a farm so they always had plenty of food. Just not enough money for fuel to heat their home which was common.
There came a time when her parents had to make the hardest decision they ever had to make. Use the corn for fuel. The cobs were used in the kitchen stove so they knew it would work for the furnace in their basement. On the day when Mrs.Paneitz’s father backed a wagon full of corn to the window to the furnace room to dump all the corn in the room, her family noticed that their father”s hair started turning gray.
